Kefir kelimesi arapça keif kökünden türemiştir türkçe keyif olarakta okunabilir kendini iyi hissetmek anşamına gelir.Bu ismi almasının nedeni kefir içenlerin kendilerini iyi hissetmeleri vucutta mutluluk hormonu salgısının artamasıdır .
